I constructed this chic pencil wrap skirt using fabric from a Japanese raincoat (Michiyuki). I kept some of the design elements of the original garment – the curved front edge on the wrap and some of the angular shape. I also included snap closures and a Victorian mourning button as an accent. What, pray tell, is a mourning button? During the Victorian era a widow mourning her husband wore black - including the buttons. There are entire websites explaining the rules women followed in order to mourn properly. I won't bore you with the deets, but suffice it to say there were RULES!

This project was my proof of concept that kimono fabric, though very narrow, can still be made into modern garments.
